This guide walks you through installing GroupMe MCP and connecting it to Claude Desktop.

Install with Claude Desktop

1

Get a GroupMe access token

You need a GroupMe access token before you can run the server. See the Authentication page for the two ways to get one.
2

Add the server to Claude Desktop

Open ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json (create it if it doesn’t exist) and add the following configuration:
Replace <your-token> with your actual GroupMe access token. On Windows, the config file is located at %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json.
3

Restart Claude Desktop

Quit and reopen Claude Desktop. The GroupMe MCP server starts automatically when Claude launches.
4

Verify the connection

In a new Claude conversation, ask something like:
“List my GroupMe groups.”
Claude will call the list_groups tool and return your groups. If you see a tool call appear in the response, the server is connected and working.

Local development

If you want to run the server locally from source — for example, to inspect tool calls or develop new tools — clone the repository and use the MCP Inspector:
uv run mcp dev opens the MCP Inspector in your browser. The Inspector lets you call any tool manually and inspect request and response payloads without needing an AI client.
