Use these tools to manage who belongs to a GroupMe group — add new members, remove existing ones, poll async add results, and update your own nickname.
Adding members is an asynchronous operation. add_members returns a results_id that you must pass to get_member_results to check whether the operation succeeded.

add_members

Add one or more members to a group. This is an async operation — the API queues the request and returns a results_id. Poll with get_member_results to retrieve the outcome.
string
required
The ID of the group.
object[]
required
List of member objects to add. Each object must include nickname and at least one of user_id, phone_number, or email. You may also include an optional guid for client-side tracking.
Example usage
“Add Alice (user ID 1234567) and Bob (phone +15550001234) to group 9876543.”

get_member_results

Poll the result of a previous add_members request.
The GroupMe API may return a 503 while the add operation is still processing. Retry after a short delay if you receive one.
string
required
The ID of the group.
string
required
The GUID returned from add_members.
Example usage
“Check whether the add-members request with results ID abc-123 for group 9876543 has finished.”

remove_member

Remove a member from a group.
string
required
The ID of the group.
string
required
The membership ID of the member to remove. This is distinct from the user’s user_id — it is the id field on the membership object within the group.
Example usage
“Remove the member with membership ID 555 from group 9876543.”

update_membership

Update your own nickname in a group.
string
required
The ID of the group.
string
required
Your new nickname (1–50 characters).
Example usage
“Change my nickname in group 9876543 to ‘Trail Boss’.”
